The Relationship Between Cell Phones and Cancer

Mobile is now more than ever everywhere, and scientific research continues to strive to distinguish the relationship between cell phones and cancer.

A recent study from the National Institutes of Health showed increased brain activity in participants exposed to mobile phone radiation. This study used PET scans to measure brain glucose levels, and found increased activity in the area closest to the phone antenna after 50 minutes of exposure. Despite the increase in activity is not directly associated with harmful effects, the apparent sensitivity of the human brain to phone electromagnetic waves do not cause any further questions.

In May 2011, the World Health Organization reclassified cell phone radiation exposure as "possibly carcinogenic", a label that is placed in the same category with chloroform and tin. Case-control study of the most widespread of mobile phones and cancer, Interphone study, conducted in 13 countries for a decade found that the highest value of mobile users who use their phones for 30 minutes a day for 10 years or more-are twice as likely to develop glioma, a malignant brain tumor. These results are alarming, especially since this study failed to take into account that children and young adults are much more vulnerable to cell phone radiation than adults.

Cell phone radiation testing conducted by the manufacturer also underestimated the number of users affected by the radiation. A recent paper published in the journal Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine reveals that industrial testing is done on a mannequin modeled after the 6'2 ", 200 pounds man with the phone held an inch from the ear mannequin. The study estimated that 97 percent of the population deviates from the model This realistic use and experience greater exposure.

The Federal Communications Commission requires the phone to have a Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), the size of the peak level of electromagnetic radiation in the model, is less than 1.6 watts per kilogram. However, the peak SAR may not represent the actual SAR level of an ordinary phone call. A mobile phone with a low SAR can expose users to more radiation on average than one with a high SAR. A study conducted by a professor of biotechnology research, Dr. Henry Lai, found the effects of memory loss in rats exposed to levels as low SAR, 0006 to 0.06 watts per kilogram.

In 2010, there were more than 223 million mobile phone users in the US over the age of 13 and the number keeps growing. According to CTIA, the Wireless Association, the total minutes of use of mobile phones in the US in 2009 was 2.3 trillion minutes. Mobile phone users also started at a young age. Given the indispensable role of mobile phones in our lives and growing concerns about the relationship between mobile phone use and cancer, regulatory bodies must conduct a more thorough investigation, and mobile users have to be careful and take steps to reduce their exposure to cell phone radiation .
