Depression, Grief and Sadness
Sad person may be depressed. Grief can lead to depression. The problem is that we want to rule out people dealing with grief, sadness or depression. Give them a talking to. Tell them to withdraw by the bootstraps. It does not work like that.
Sadness: It is only temporary. Sometimes it is fleeting. Other times it is full of raw grief. Sadness will at one point reduces as sadness. There may still be a hole in your heart, but you get out of it.
Grief: This is another area where we started to make a statement that should not be done. Grief has its own time. It's not the same for each of us. It could take several months. It could take several years. This is a personal thing and insensitive comments only make matters worse.
Depression: There is more than one type of depression. Sadness can turn into depression can be sadness. There is also a chemical imbalance in the brain that trigger depression. In any event it is a medical problem not a social one. Those who are depressed need medical assistance.
When looking at the doc: There are many indications that can know whether it has become a health issue. Changes in behavior, avoiding some of the favorite activities and withdrawal good indication.
So suicidal thoughts are like suicide.
What can they do? There are several steps that may be taken. Medication can help overcome the chemical imbalance. Counseling can help work through the grief and other negative emotions that contribute to the problem.
Support groups may be beneficial. Despite the depressed person may feel alone in a crowded room knowing that there are others who are dealing with similar issues can provide emotional support.
For those who have not dealt with depression, grief and sadness here is a word of advice. Comments do not always help. Being there for that person. Do not assume that this problem is a personal weakness. It could happen to anyone.
